What ACTUALLY works in therapy?
I’d be a complete hypocrite if I told you my trainings in trauma, Somatic Experiencing, IFS, psychedelics, yoga, and EMDR didn’t fundamentally shape the way I approached therapy for 13+ years.
However, as I reflect on my time as a therapist, I’m realizing what was ACTUALLY important for my clients…
Trauma + Trust: The Disconnect
Unprocessed Trauma = Dysregulated Nervous System
And, it’s really difficult to trust your intuition when your nervous system is dysregulated. It’s hard to discern a real, current threat from your system stuck in survival mode.
And when everything is a threat; nothing actually is.
Tea Rituals
Rituals are a reminder to slow down. And notice what’s happening. They are a hidden mindfulness practice. Bringing you into the present moment.
Nervous System Regulation = More Self-Trust
It’s really difficult to trust your intuition when your nervous system is dysregulated. If you’re constantly operating in survival mode, it’s hard to feel connected to the subtleties of your inner voice.
That’s why it’s not as easy as the common advice of “just trust your gut” makes it seem.
Sliding Door Moments
On this particular hike, my mind wandered to life choices and the paths we take. Not necessarily the, “do I blow up my life for this new path?!” kind of choices, but the “micro-choices”. The seemingly insignificant decisions we make every single day.
